Enbridge Line 5 pipeline leak sparks safety investigations

A natural gas leak occurred on Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline near the Wisconsin-Michigan border after a parked subcontractor truck rolled into an excavation site near Saxon in Iron County. While no injuries were reported, the incident triggered a half-mile evacuation zone and the temporary power shutoff for several residents to prevent fire risks.

Enbridge is working to remove remaining vapors and aims to restore service to the pipeline by September 5. The Line 5 pipeline transports up to 23 million gallons of crude oil and natural gas liquids daily between Superior and Sarnia, Ontario.

The incident has intensified political scrutiny. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers expressed concern over the spill, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has asked Enbridge to halt work in the area pending an investigation. In Michigan, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has filed a legal brief seeking the removal of an underwater section of the pipeline. The event also carries political weight in the region as midterm elections approach.
