EnBW completes He Dreiht offshore wind farm in the North Sea

EnBW has completed the construction of the He Dreiht offshore wind farm in the North Sea, located approximately 110 kilometers west of the Heligoland archipelago. The project, which cost roughly 2.4 billion euros, consists of 64 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 960 megawatts.

Once fully operational, expected by late summer, the facility is projected to supply electricity to approximately 1.1 million households. Notably, the project is among the first German offshore wind farms to operate without subsidies through renewable energy purchase laws; instead, EnBW has secured long-term contracts with major industrial consumers including Google, Bosch, Deutsche Bahn, and Fraport.

The infrastructure includes a sea-based converter station and high-voltage cables spanning over 120 kilometers underwater and 110 kilometers on land. While the project marks a significant milestone for Germany’s goal to reach 30 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2030, EnBW executives have warned of rising costs, noting that turbine, logistics, and cable expenses have increased by 30 to 40 percent over the last five years.
