Endesa invests 11 million euros to reinforce electrical grids in La Palma and La Gomera

Endesa, through its subsidiary e-distribución, has invested over 11 million euros over the last five years to strengthen electrical networks in the Spanish islands of La Palma and La Gomera. The primary goal of these works is to create more resilient, reliable, and agile power grids.

A significant portion of the budget was allocated to La Palma following the 2021 Tajogaite volcanic eruption. The eruption damaged medium and low voltage distribution networks with lava, necessitating extensive reconstruction and the implementation of a double electrical ring to reconnect the north and south of the island. This multi-phase project included rebuilding the electrical mesh and installing key facilities for island energy operations.

Recent efforts have focused on closing electrical rings in both islands. This technical improvement provides alternative medium-voltage power supplies for connected transformation centers. In the event of a primary supply failure, the system can use these alternative routes to maintain or quickly restore service. These rings also enhance network robustness, improve response capacity to incidents, and allow for remote supply restoration, thereby reducing customer impact.
