Endometriosis diagnosis often delayed by years for many patients

Endometriosis, a chronic inflammatory condition affecting approximately 1 in 10 women globally, often faces significant diagnostic delays. According to the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, patients may wait a decade or more after the onset of symptoms before receiving an official diagnosis.

The condition occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows on other parts of the body, such as the ovaries, bladder, or bowel. Symptoms can include debilitating pain during menstruation, intercourse, or bowel movements, as well as bloating, fatigue, and infertility. While the exact cause remains unknown, experts suggest genetics may play a role.

New diagnostic tests are being utilized in various countries to improve detection, though these specific tools are not yet available in the United States. Medical professionals, including Dr. Drorit Or of Mount Sinai West, note that the pain can be severe enough to prevent individuals from attending school or work.
