In Brazil, the condition affects an estimated 5% to 15% of women of reproductive age, with the average time between symptom onset and confirmed diagnosis reaching seven years. This delay is frequently attributed to the normalization of menstrual cramps and difficulties in accessing specialized examinations.

Newer reports emphasize the risks of misdiagnosis and gender-specific data gaps in healthcare. The case of Amber Williams, who underwent unnecessary surgeries for her appendix and gallbladder before receiving a correct diagnosis, illustrates how severe symptoms can be dismissed as normal menstrual pain. Additionally, experts from the German Pain Society note that chronic pain—lasting longer than three months—is influenced by psychological factors, such as stress and emotions, which affect how the brain processes pain signals.
