Italy Senate approves law to reintroduce sustainable nuclear energy

The Italian Senate has passed a delegation law to reintroduce nuclear energy into the national energy agenda. The legislation provides the legal framework for the government to regulate sustainable nuclear power, including safety, authorization procedures, and radioactive waste management.

The law does not mandate the immediate construction of new plants or specify particular technologies or locations. Instead, it allows the executive branch to evaluate options such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), Advanced Modular Reactors (AMRs), and potentially fusion technology. The government has a 12-month window to develop necessary implementing decrees.

Minister of Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin indicated that the first plants could potentially return to operation between 2033 and 2035. Projections suggest that by 2050, nuclear capacity could cover between 11% and 22% of Italy's electricity demand. While the industrial sector shows readiness with over 100 active companies, local concerns remain, such as in the Basilicata region regarding potential site selection.
