Energy costs impact Italian healthcare facilities and hospitals

Rising energy costs for electricity and gas are significantly impacting the budgets of Italian healthcare facilities, including local health authorities (ASL) and hospitals. Because medical facilities must maintain continuous operations—powering clinical ventilation, refrigeration for medicines, and IT networks for diagnostic imaging—they cannot easily reduce consumption during peak price periods.

Data indicates substantial fluctuations in gas prices. While the PSV day-ahead monthly average for June was approximately 47.18 €/MWh, prices saw a marked increase in subsequent months, rising to 78.80 €/MWh by September. ARERA updates the gas component for vulnerability protection services using these monthly averages, which directly affects the financial planning and public budgets of the National Health Service (SSN).
