Tulane University study links nocturnal light to heart risks

Research from Tulane University, published in the European Heart Journal, has identified a statistical association between nocturnal light exposure and increased cardiovascular risks. Analyzing data from over 11,000 participants in the UK Biobank, the study found that individuals exposed to light levels above 3 lux during sleep faced a 29% higher risk of heart failure. Other observed associations include increased risks of atrial fibrillation, myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular mortality.

Experts also highlight the psychological and biological impacts of modern sleep habits. Checking smartphones immediately upon waking can trigger a sudden shift from rest to stress, increasing cortisol levels and causing premature fatigue. Conversely, the compulsive monitoring of sleep metrics via wearable technology can turn rest into a performance-based task, which may actually worsen sleep quality.

To improve sleep hygiene, specialists recommend delaying screen use for 15–20 minutes after waking, maintaining total darkness in the bedroom to support melatonin production, and using sunglasses when returning home after night shifts to mitigate morning light exposure.
