Solar energy trends shift toward repowering and smart storage in Germany and Austria

Developments in the solar energy sector across Germany and Austria are shifting focus toward efficiency, self-consumption, and intelligent storage. In Germany, the modernization or ‘repowering’ of existing solar parks is gaining traction. Service provider Greenbuddies notes that replacing aging components with modern technology can increase efficiency by up to 30 percent, allowing one new module to replace two older ones while utilizing existing infrastructure.

Economic incentives are also driving a shift in consumer behavior. With feed-in tariffs significantly lower than retail electricity prices, maximizing self-consumption through electric vehicles, heat pumps, or home storage has become the primary goal for solar owners.

In Austria, legislative changes are addressing energy management and costs. New subsidy frameworks planned for 2027 aim to move away from rapid-fire funding calls toward a system that rewards the use of intelligent energy management and storage systems. Additionally, new regulations allow for easier sharing, selling, or gifting of self-generated electricity, aiming to better integrate solar power into the grid and reduce costs for consumers.
