Europe inflation rises as energy and fuel costs surge
Inflation rates across Europe have surged in September, driven primarily by rising energy and fuel costs. In the Eurozone, inflation reached 3.8%, the highest level since September 2023, according to Eurostat. This increase was fueled by an 18.9% year-on-year rise in energy prices.
National economies are seeing similar trends. In Austria, inflation rose to 3.6%, with heating oil prices increasing by over 60%. In Germany, inflation hit 3.3%, also propelled by significant hikes in heating oil and fuel. Italy reported a three-year high of 4.2% inflation, while in South Tyrol, consumer prices rose by 4.1%.
While energy costs are the primary driver, the services sector remains a significant contributor to price growth across the region. Conversely, some sectors show relief; for instance, electricity prices have seen decreases in parts of Austria and Germany due to government measures and market conditions.
