German and Eurozone inflation trends
Overview
In mid-2026, Germany experienced economic volatility characterized by rising inflation and challenges in the food industry. In July, the national inflation rate rose to 2.8 percent, driven largely by an 8.3 percent increase in energy costs following the expiration of a government fuel tax discount and global market instability.
By late August, confirmed data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) showed the annual inflation rate rose to 2.9 percent, up from 2.8 percent in July and 2.3 percent in June. This acceleration is primarily attributed to a 10.5 percent year-on-year surge in energy costs. Destatis President Ruth Brand noted that the conflict in Iran has significantly impacted fuel prices, with fuels increasing by 27.7 percent and heating oil rising by 49.6 percent.
These spikes are linked to geopolitical tensions in the Persian Gulf and difficulties navigating the Strait of Hormuz. As a result, European gas prices have climbed to over 79 euros per megawatt hour (MWh), the highest level since late 2022. Concerns regarding potential price shocks during the upcoming winter heating season have emerged, as German gas storage facilities are currently only about half full. Analysts at Goldman Sachs have suggested that TTF gas prices could potentially exceed 100 euros per MWh by December 2026 if supply issues persist.
In response to rising inflation across the eurozone, which reached 3.3 percent in August, the European Central Bank (ECB) increased the deposit rate from 2.25 to 2.5 percent. This marks the second rate hike this year aimed at curbing price pressures caused by high oil and gas costs.
