Energy prices rise for consumers in Belgium and Spain

Energy costs are rising for consumers in parts of Europe. In Flanders, Belgium, the average cost for new fixed electricity contracts rose by 15 percent and natural gas by 27 percent in August compared to July. This increase is attributed to volatility in international energy markets, specifically rising gas prices on the European market, higher demand, and reduced wind and nuclear production. Analysis suggests significant price disparities between providers, with potential savings of hundreds of euros for consumers who compare contracts.

In Spain, average household electricity bills under the semi-regulated PVPC tariff have exceeded 100 euros for the first time in four years. Data from the consumer organization FACUA indicates that August bills are approximately 17.3 percent higher than the same period last year. Notably, off-peak electricity rates have seen a sharp increase of 37.1 percent compared to last August, significantly impacting the cost of electricity during traditionally cheaper hours.
