Belgium fuel price volatility and rising energy costs

Overview

Following the volatility of July and August 2026, Belgian fuel prices rose again in early September. Gasoline (E10) increased by 9 cents per liter, while diesel rose by 14 cents. Some stations reported gasoline prices exceeding the 2-euro mark, reaching a maximum of €2.058 per liter. Vincent Orts, spokesperson for the Belgian Federation of Fuel Traders (Brafco), noted that geopolitical factors, including potential US policy decisions regarding Iran, could influence future fluctuations.

Heating costs also saw adjustments in September. As of September 9, the official maximum price for H0/H7 heating oil (mazout) was set at €1.4658 per liter for orders of 2,000 liters or more, and €1.5063 per liter for smaller orders. By late September, diesel prices reached a new record high, and gasoline 95 reached 2.05 euros per liter, a 42-cent increase over the previous six months. Heating oil for orders under 2,000 liters rose by 75 cents per liter. Domestic energy costs also climbed, with electricity increasing by 5 cents per kWh, natural gas by 3 cents, and pellets by 1.15 euros per 15kg bag since March.

By late September, broader European energy trends began impacting the region. Gas prices surged, influenced by the Dutch TTF index which rose nearly 93% following Middle East tensions. In Belgium, regulatory shifts are targeting long-term natural gas use. A draft decree in Flanders would require Fluvius to identify areas where gas networks might be decommissioned, particularly in regions with district heating or high heat pump usage, potentially affecting 2.4 million Flemish households. Long-term projections suggest that by 2029, natural gas could cost €77 more per year, while electricity costs may decrease by €42 due to excise tax adjustments.
