European natural gas prices approach 100 euros per MWh

European wholesale natural gas prices have surged toward the 100 euro per megawatt-hour (MWh) threshold, reaching levels not seen since 2022. The Dutch Title Transfer Facility (TTF) benchmark has seen significant increases, driven by geopolitical instability in the Middle East and concerns over supply disruptions in the Persian Gulf.

European gas storage levels are currently at approximately 74.6 percent capacity, which is significantly below the five-year seasonal average of 89.5 percent. This represents the lowest inventory level for this time of year since 2009. Specifically, Germany's gas storage is filled to approximately 61.5 percent.

The price spike is compounded by competition between European and Asian buyers for liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargoes. Additionally, French power futures for next month have exceeded 200 euros per MWh, highlighting the tight link between gas prices and electricity costs. Analysts suggest that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and potential disruptions to shipments through the Strait of Hormuz remain primary drivers of market volatility.
