Greek fuel price volatility and inflation trends
Overview
By mid-August, rising fuel costs began significantly altering summer travel patterns in Greece. As average prices for unleaded gasoline reached approximately €1.988 per litre and diesel reached €1.978 per litre, the traditional cost advantage of diesel vehicles nearly vanished. Travelers have been forced to redesign routes and trip durations to accommodate budget constraints. While mainland prices remained near the national average, island destinations such as the Cyclades, Dodecanese, and Ionian Islands faced much higher costs, often exceeding the €2.00 threshold due to increased transport expenses and higher ferry fares for vehicles. By August 18, national averages for unleaded gasoline returned to the €2.00 per litre mark, reaching 2.002 euros, while diesel stood at 1.996 euros per litre. Despite government subsidies and refinery discounts, the effectiveness of these interventions has been questioned. Reports from the Fuel Price Observatory indicate a policy impasse where actual price reductions reaching consumers have been minimal. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, where energy flows have reportedly dropped to approximately 11% of pre-war levels, have driven Brent crude prices toward $100 per barrel. This global volatility has reversed previous slight domestic price decreases. In late August, the political debate intensified. SYRIZA lawmaker Pavlos Polakis criticized the government and major refineries, alleging that gasoline prices could drop to €1.20 per litre through specific interventions. Polakis claimed refining margins have surged from $6 per barrel in 2019 to $35 per barrel in 2026. He proposed capping refining profit margins at $8-9 per barrel and reducing the Special Consumption Tax from €700 to €400 per ton, characterizing the current pricing structure as a ‘robbery’ facilitated by the Mitsotakis administration. New data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) confirms that inflation rose to 3.8% in August, up from 3.4% in July.
