Energy renovation challenges and processes in France

Energy renovation processes in France face both procedural complexities and systemic criticisms. Effective renovation requires a structured seven-step approach, beginning with a comprehensive diagnostic of the building to identify heat loss in areas such as roofs, walls, windows, and thermal bridges. Establishing realistic goals regarding comfort, cost reduction, and heat management is essential for a successful project.

However, the current framework for energy renovation in France is under scrutiny. Critics argue that key mechanisms, such as the MaPrimRénov’ aid program and the Diagnostic de Performance Énergétique (DPE), are dysfunctional and subject to frequent, ineffective reforms. Concerns have been raised regarding the complexity and cost of these systems, as well as the potential for fraud. Furthermore, the DPE is criticized for focusing primarily on heat retention while failing to account for a building's ability to manage extreme heat during heatwaves.
