Energy savings in Italy: electricity, gas, and heating efficiency

As autumn approaches, Italian households are increasingly comparing electricity and gas tariffs to prepare for rising heating costs. Market offers vary based on consumption levels, contract duration, and the presence of fixed fees. Dual fuel offers from providers such as Sorgenia, Edison, Engie, Octopus Energy, and A2A Energia are currently available, with monthly simulated costs ranging from approximately 49 to 64 euros depending on the specific plan.

Consumers face a choice between fixed-price contracts, which offer predictability by locking in energy components, and indexed contracts, which follow wholesale market indices like PUN for electricity and PSV for gas. While indexed rates can decrease when market prices drop, they also carry the risk of increasing when market prices rise.

In addition to choosing providers, understanding heating equipment is vital for energy efficiency. A common misconception regarding radiator thermostats is that higher numbers increase heating speed. In reality, the numbers represent target room temperatures rather than heat intensity. Setting a thermostat to a higher level does not accelerate heating; it simply instructs the system to continue working until a higher temperature is reached, which can lead to unnecessary energy waste.
