Italian residential energy market trends and volatility
Overview
Energy providers in Italy have introduced various fixed-rate electricity and gas contracts to protect consumers from wholesale market volatility. Octopus has launched the ‘Octopus Fissa 12M’ plan, fixing raw material costs at 0.176 €/kWh for electricity and 0.81 €/Smc for gas. Engie offers the ‘Energia Punto Fisso 12 Mesi’ promotion, providing renewable-sourced electricity at 0.199 €/kWh and gas at 0.89 €/Smc, both with an annual fixed fee of 120 €.
As autumn approaches, households are evaluating dual fuel offers from providers including Sorgenia, Edison, and A2A Energia, with simulated monthly costs ranging from approximately 49 to 64 euros. Consumers continue to weigh the predictability of fixed-price contracts against indexed contracts that follow the PUN for electricity and PSV for gas. To manage costs, there is an emphasis on heating efficiency, specifically noting that radiator thermostat numbers represent target temperatures rather than heat intensity; higher settings do not accelerate heating but can lead to energy waste.
Market volatility remains a factor. In August, the Prezzo Unico Nazionale (PUN) reached 207.84 euros per megawatt-hour, its highest level since late 2022, driven by extreme heat and record cooling demand. While the PUN saw a downward correction to 178.60 euros per megawatt-hour by late September, significant regional price disparities persist. Northern and Central-North regions have maintained premiums over the national benchmark, while Sicily recorded the lowest regional prices at 148.88 euros per megawatt-hour.
