Energy sectors in New Zealand and Australia report shifts in demand and renewable transitions

Energy providers in New Zealand and Australia are reporting significant shifts in demand and infrastructure investment. In New Zealand, Meridian Energy reported record electricity demand in July 2026, while Contact Energy saw increased operational performance, including a rise in mass market electricity and gas sales to 579GWh. Contact Energy also reported a significant decrease in unit generation costs to $36.99/MWh.

In Australia, a $2.5 billion government funding initiative aims to transition the Tomago aluminium smelter from coal to renewable energy. While the move is expected to unlock at least 3 gigawatts of wind and solar capacity, Rio Tinto does not anticipate the facility will be 100 per cent renewable until 2033. Squadron Energy has emphasized the need for multiple generators to work alongside Snowy Hydro to ensure the transition is competitive and delivered on time.
