Overview

Energy providers in New Zealand have reported growth in sales and a focus on renewable infrastructure expansion. In July 2026, Contact Energy noted rising electricity and gas sales to mass-market customers, alongside the development of new solar, geothermal, and battery projects. By August 2026, reports indicated record electricity demand in New Zealand, with Meridian Energy noting high usage levels. Contact Energy further reported a decrease in unit generation costs to $36.99/MWh and an increase in mass market electricity and gas sales to 579GWh.

However, the sector faced energy security risks due to a tightening domestic gas supply. Methanex decided to indefinitely idle its methanol plants because of insufficient gas availability. John Carnegie, Chief Executive of Energy Resources Aotearoa, noted that Methanex previously acted as a ‘safety valve’ for the electricity system. While idling these plants may provide short-term downward pressure on electricity prices, Carnegie warned that the ‘underlying energy system remains in crisis.’ To mitigate shortages, Genesis Energy reportedly increased coal imports. Carnegie attributed the supply gap to the 2018 oil and gas exploration ban.

By September 2026, data from the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment showed renewable sources accounted for 92 per cent of electricity generation for the quarter ending June 30. This included record solar generation of 242GWh and geothermal generation of 2,621 GWh. Wholesale electricity prices decreased by 66 per cent compared to the previous year. Energy Minister Simeon Brown attributed price decreases to factors including the procurement of an LNG import facility and the fast-track approval of eight renewable energy projects, noting the reversal of the oil and gas exploration ban as part of a strategy for secure power.
