Global expansion of battery energy storage systems accelerates

Various regions are seeing significant advancements in battery energy storage systems (BESS) to support renewable energy integration and grid stability.

In Poland, R. Power has launched its first standalone BESS project, the 5 MW / 10 MWh Herby installation. The company plans to expand its European portfolio to a total of 1.6 GW / 5.8 GWh. In India, Sahaj Solar is investing approximately ₹250 million to establish a 1.8 GWh BESS manufacturing facility in Gujarat, aiming to serve both domestic and international markets by 2027.

In the United States, a 3.75 megawatt-hour lithium-ion battery system has been installed at the Peace Bridge Place affordable housing complex in Buffalo, New York. Developed by Good Carbon Co. and manufactured by Viridi, the project aims to demonstrate the safety and cost-effectiveness of large-scale residential battery storage.

In Europe, Bulgaria is emerging as a leading market for BESS. Electrohold Bulgaria reports that the country is becoming a central hub for energy storage in Southeast Europe, helping to balance the grid as solar capacity in the region has quadrupled over the last five years.
