Energy storage solutions address European heatwave impacts
Heatwaves and droughts in Europe are impacting economic performance by increasing cooling demands and driving up energy prices. High electricity tariffs, sometimes reaching 300-500 EUR/MWh, can force industrial sectors like glass and concrete production to reduce or halt operations due to water shortages or costs.
Energy storage is identified as a key solution to stabilize the grid and mitigate price spikes. Bulgaria is cited as a successful example, having integrated approximately 10 gigawatt-hours of battery capacity to maintain relatively stable electricity prices during critical periods.
In Hungary, MVM Group has commissioned two new energy storage units. One such facility in Tiszaújváros features a 31 MW battery system with 62 MWh capacity, located near the Tisza Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Power Plant. This system, supported by Siemens medium-voltage switching equipment, can supply power to approximately 120,000 households for two hours and can respond to grid fluctuations within seconds.
