Soil‑moisture deficits in the south threaten further crop yields and irrigation water supplies. Municipalities such as Duderstadt have begun diverting river inflows to sustain fish ponds, warning of stagnation and oxygen depletion. Officials expect the dry spell to persist for weeks with little rain forecast, expanding the agricultural and water‑resource challenges beyond the north.
On 25 July, the German Weather Service reported an extreme heatwave across western Germany, with temperatures forecast to reach 40 °C in the Oberrhein region and similar highs in the Saarland, raising wildfire risk. Central Hesse recorded unusually low soil moisture in the top 60 cm, requiring a month‑long rain event to recover. Duderstadt’s Hahle river ran dry and the Brehme stream’s flow remained minimal, prompting temporary disconnection of the Brehme inlet to protect pond water quality.
