Energy transition drives new heating technologies and urban decarbonization solutions

The energy transition is driving the development of new domestic heating systems that combine multiple technologies to meet diverse housing needs. Aerothermal heat pumps have become a consolidated renewable technology, using electricity to extract heat from outdoor air. To improve flexibility, hybrid systems are gaining popularity by combining aerothermal heat pumps with backup boilers that can utilize renewable gases like biomethane or hydrogen. These hybrid setups allow the heat pump to handle most thermal demands while the boiler activates during extreme outdoor temperatures or high demand.

In the context of urban decarbonization, Tecnalia will host the ‘Urban Decarbonization Forum: District Heating and Cooling Solutions’ on October 20 in Vitoria. The event aims to bring together public administrations, investors, and energy operators to discuss the role of heat and cold networks in city energy transitions. Discussions will focus on innovative technologies, including fifth-generation (5G) networks that operate at low temperatures to integrate renewable energy and waste heat.
