Decarbonization of heating technologies

Overview

The energy transition is driving the adoption of diverse heating technologies across domestic, urban, and industrial sectors to achieve decarbonization.

In residential and urban settings, aerothermal heat pumps are becoming a consolidated renewable technology. To increase flexibility, hybrid systems are being utilized, combining heat pumps with backup boilers that can run on renewable gases like hydrogen or biomethane. Urban decarbonization efforts are also focusing on district heating and cooling networks, including fifth-generation (5G) networks that integrate renewable energy and waste heat.

In the industrial sector, decarbonizing process heat is being addressed through CO2 heat pumps, which use carbon dioxide as a natural refrigerant to upgrade low-temperature thermal energy. Other industrial solutions include biomass boilers using agricultural or wood residues, waste-heat boilers that capture energy from existing processes, and recovered-fuel boilers that burn non-recyclable waste to reduce fossil carbon emissions.
