Engie Brazil completes R$8.36 bn purchase of 40% of Jirau hydroelectric plant

Engie Brazil Energia closed a transaction on 17 July to acquire a 40% stake in the Jirau hydroelectric power plant in Rondônia for a total of R$8.36 billion. The deal was financed with R$2.62 billion raised on the market and an additional R$5.74 billion contributed by Engie's existing participation in the project. The offer price was set at R$30.50 per share, resulting in the issuance of about 274 million new ordinary shares.

Jirau, with an installed capacity of 3,750 MW, supplies roughly 3.7% of Brazil’s hydroelectric generation and ranks as the country's fourth‑largest hydro plant. Engie's acquisition is intended to strengthen its renewable energy portfolio, improve operational and financial resilience, and provide flexible generation capacity for peak demand periods. Board Chair Maurício Bahr highlighted minority shareholder approval as a sign of confidence in the strategy, while CEO Eduardo Sattamini said the transaction enhances the group's capital structure and long‑term investment capability.
