Brazil energy firms raise capital, expand hydro projects
Entities: Brazil · WEG S.A. · Engie Brasil Energia · Jaguara Hydroelectric Plant
Overview
In early July 2026 ISA Energia announced a primary placement of preferred shares, later expanding the potential raise to about R$1.3 billion as demand grew. On 24 July the board approved a share offering of roughly 44.4 million preferred shares at R$27 each – a 5.3 % discount to the prior close – targeting about R$1.2 billion. Subscription, limited to professional investors with priority for existing shareholders, began on 15 July and the shares are set to trade on 27 July, subject to approval of a new capital limit at an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting on 24 July.
Engie Brasil Energia’s July public offering of ordinary shares raised R$8.36 billion, financing its purchase of a 40 % stake in the Jirau hydroelectric plant and strengthening its capital structure. Following the capital raise, Engie signed a contract with equipment maker WEG to add two 116‑MW generating units to the Jaguara hydro plant, expanding capacity from 424 MW to 656 MW. The project, valued at roughly R$1.2 billion, is part of a broader modernisation programme and is expected to be commissioned in 2030, enhancing Brazil’s hydro‑electric role in the energy transition.
Light (LIGT3) completed a R$1.5 billion capital increase after exiting judicial recovery and later approved an additional R$1.35 billion funded by its sole shareholder to support a court‑approved debt‑restructuring plan. Telefônica Brasil (Vivo) announced a R$500 million interest‑on‑equity distribution through April 2027.
