Engineer Valery Borovskikh patents multi-fuel engine

Moscow-based engineer Valery Borovskikh has been granted a patent by the Federal Institute of Industrial Property (Rospatent) for a new internal combustion engine design capable of running on various fuels without modification.

The engine can operate using gasoline, diesel, gas, and other liquid fuels. The design achieves this versatility by utilizing hot gases from a previous combustion cycle to initiate ignition.

Technically, the design incorporates a separate chamber with a volume of 5–10% of the combustion chamber. After an explosion, hot exhaust gases enter this chamber and are held until the end of the next compression cycle. An electronically controlled valve, operated by two electromagnets, then pumps the hot gas back into the cylinder.

In diesel variants, the system proposes injecting fuel at temperatures below the auto-ignition threshold and then initiating combustion via the injected hot gas. The technical documentation notes that maintaining peak cycle temperatures below 2000°C helps significantly reduce the formation of nitrogen oxides and soot.
