Russian internal combustion engine patent developments

Overview

Recent developments in Russian engineering have seen the patenting of two distinct internal combustion engine designs aimed at improving versatility and efficiency.

In mid-September, Valery Borovskikh was granted a patent for a multi-fuel engine capable of operating on gasoline, diesel, and gas without modification. The design uses an electronically controlled valve to pump hot exhaust gases from a previous cycle into a small secondary chamber to initiate ignition. This method aims to reduce nitrogen oxides and soot by maintaining peak cycle temperatures below 2000°C.

Following this, engineer Vladimir Mikhailov received a patent for a closed-cycle engine designed to reuse all exhaust gases. This system cools, filters, and recombines exhaust with oxygen and new fuel to return it to the combustion chamber. This closed-loop approach is intended to retain thermal energy, increase thermal efficiency, and reduce fuel consumption.
