England considers lifting 41-year football stadium alcohol ban

The English government is revisiting the 41-year-old ban on alcohol consumption in football stands. The prohibition was established in 1985 to combat hooliganism and violence and currently applies to the top five tiers of English football, from the Premier League to the National League.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has advocated for reviewing the law, describing the current regulations as “outdated and unfair.” He noted that football fans are treated differently than spectators at rugby, cricket, or music concerts held in the same stadiums. Burnham has suggested the possibility of a pilot program to test the change.

The Football Supporters’ Association and the English Football Association have expressed support for a trial. However, the proposal faces opposition from law enforcement; Mark Roberts, head of national football policing, has characterized the return of alcohol to the stands as a “bad idea.”
