Proposal to repeal English football alcohol ban

Overview

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has proposed repealing the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol) Act 1985, which prevents fans from drinking alcohol in sight of the pitch during the top five tiers of men’s football in England and Wales. Burnham described the 1980s-era legislation as “discriminatory” and “outdated,” noting that supporters of sports like rugby and cricket are permitted to consume alcohol in their seats.

While the Football Supporters’ Association and the English Football League have welcomed the proposal, the UK Football Policing Unit warned that changing the rules without extensive consultation would be “incredibly rash” due to safety risks. Burnham suggested implementing changes on a trial basis.

Following these comments, the government indicated that the remarks may have been spontaneous and that no concrete legislative changes are currently being considered. However, the debate follows recent precedents in the women’s game, where most clubs in the Women’s Super League and WSL2 have opted to allow alcohol consumption in view of the pitch starting from the 2026/27 season.
