England Enforces Nationwide Mobile Phone Ban in Schools

From 29 June 2026, all state‑funded schools in England must prohibit pupils from using mobile phones and similar smart devices for the entire school day under Section 36 of the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026. Schools are required to have a clear, enforceable policy and will be inspected by Ofsted, with allowances only for medical needs or limited access for sixth‑form students in designated areas.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said the ban aims to protect attention spans and wellbeing, while Technology Secretary Liz Kendall emphasised the goal of ensuring technology enriches children’s lives. Sir Martyn Oliver, chief inspector for Ofsted, backed the move, and the government will provide support through Attendance and Behaviour Hubs. A Uswitch survey highlighted that many parents anticipate children will seek work‑arounds, prompting the launch of a Safer Screens guidance tool.
