England murder trial: Stepfather accused of killing student Carla Georgescu

A murder trial has commenced in England regarding the death of 19-year-old student Carla Georgescu, whose body was discovered on February 5 at her University of Central Lancashire student residence. The discovery occurred on her 20th birthday.

Nathan Owens, 32, the victim's stepfather, is accused of the killing. Prosecutors allege that Owens had developed a ‘dangerous sexual obsession’ with Georgescu over a period of weeks, months, or potentially years. The prosecution stated that the defendant may have been motivated by ‘sexual jealousy’ after learning that Georgescu planned to meet a man she had met through an online romantic relationship.

University staff who found the victim described a grim scene, noting she was found slumped against a wardrobe door with facial injuries and a leather belt tightly fastened around her neck. While initial impressions suggested a possible suicide, forensic investigations led to the murder charges. The prosecution characterized the killing as the ‘final point’ of a long-standing unilateral obsession.
