Georgescu was discovered dead on February 5, her 20th birthday, at her University of Central Lancashire student residence. While the scene was initially staged to resemble a suicide, forensic investigations and trial evidence revealed a ‘horrible and brutal’ attack. Prosecutors established that Owens had developed a ‘dangerous sexual obsession’ with the victim, which included digitally altering her childhood photographs to create indecent images and filming himself performing sexual acts in her bedroom using a doll made to resemble her.

Evidence showed that on the night of the murder, Owens traveled approximately 160 kilometers from Hartlepool to Preston. Surveillance footage captured him entering the dormitory at 4:00 AM with a blanket over his head and leaving at 5:30 AM wearing a medical mask and using an umbrella to hide his face. At the time of his departure, he was reportedly wearing the victim's sneakers and carrying her clothing. The prosecution argued the motive was ‘sexual jealousy’ stemming from Georgescu’s plans to meet a man from an online relationship.
