A record 230 people arrived in the UK on a single 15-metre vessel after crossing the English Channel from France, surpassing the previous record of 165 set in July. The boat, which arrived in Dover in the early hours of Monday, was described by French rescue services as “buckling” under the weight of the passengers.

The Home Office condemned the incident as a demonstration of the “reckless and dangerous tactics” used by criminal gangs who cram large numbers of people onto unseaworthy vessels. Authorities noted a trend of smugglers using larger “mega-dinghies” to increase profits and evade detection. Many of these vessels are reportedly manufactured in China and moved through European staging posts like Germany.

Despite the record single-boat crossing, provisional data indicates that the total number of people crossing the Channel has declined by approximately 43 percent compared to the same period last year, with roughly 14,819 arrivals recorded so far in 2026.

In response to the ongoing crisis, the UK government has implemented a payment-by-results deal with France to increase personnel on French beaches by 40 percent. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has vowed to “change tactics” and remain relentless in pursuing smuggling gangs.
