English Channel: Record 230 migrants arrive in UK on single boat

A record 230 people arrived in the United Kingdom on a single 15-metre vessel after crossing the English Channel from France, surpassing the previous record of 165 set in July. The boat, which departed from near Berck-sur-Mer, was intercepted by British authorities including the Border Force and RNLI.

Authorities have warned of a growing trend where people-smugglers use “mega-dinghies” to maximize profits and evade detection. These larger vessels allow traffickers to carry hundreds of passengers at once, a tactic described by the Home Office as “reckless and dangerous.” Many of these boats are believed to be manufactured in China and staged through European hubs like Germany.

Despite this record crossing, provisional data indicates that the total number of small boat arrivals in 2026 has declined by approximately 43 percent compared to the same period last year, with roughly 14,819 to 15,242 people having crossed so far. The UK government has implemented a payment-by-results deal with France to increase personnel on French beaches by 40 percent to combat these crossings.
