UK-France Channel migrant crossings
Overview
Following a period of seasonal decline in late August, authorities are responding to new tactics by smugglers using larger vessels. In early September, France deployed a specialized 45-person “surge” team to beaches west of Calais. This unit utilizes drones and aerial reconnaissance to disrupt smuggling supply chains and target launch sites. The deployment follows a record-breaking incident involving a 15-meter mega-inflatable boat carrying 260 migrants, during which at least 30 people reportedly fell into the sea due to overcrowding.
To bolster search and rescue capacity, Frontex is deploying patrol vessels to the English Channel and North Sea. This includes Spanish patrol boats operating through October and a Lithuanian vessel scheduled to assist French naval patrols through January. This reinforcement supports the existing £660 million bilateral security pact between the UK and France.
On 6 September, approximately 140 migrants were rescued from a “mega dinghy” that launched from the Normandy coast near Cherbourg. The vessel undertook an unusually long crossing of 170 to 200 nautical miles. After being shadowed by French coastguard vessels for 10 hours, the migrants were met by RNLI lifeboats in UK waters and transported to the Isle of Wight and Kent. Authorities noted that smugglers appear to be using these larger, more heavily loaded vessels to evade increased policing in the Calais region.
