English Channel migrant crossings persist despite increased security

Authorities in northern France and the United Kingdom are facing ongoing challenges with migrant crossings in the English Channel. Between August 14 and 15, 2026, significant rescue operations were mobilized near Dieppe and Berck-sur-Mer to assist migrants attempting to reach the United Kingdom. During these operations, rescue vessels including the gendarmerie maritime patrollers Oyapock and Cormoran, as well as the state-chartered Minck, were deployed to prevent people from being isolated by tides.

Reports from the coast indicate that smuggling networks are becoming increasingly coordinated. Smugglers have reportedly begun pushing migrants into the water to bypass police presence on beaches, despite dangerous currents. While official figures suggest a 43 percent drop in small boat arrivals this year compared to 2025, the use of larger, high-capacity vessels continues to pose significant risks to life and remains a central political issue for both France and the UK.
