English Channel migrants: Record 230 people arrive in single boat

A record 230 migrants arrived in Dover, UK, after crossing the English Channel in a single boat, breaking the previous record of 165 set in July. The Home Office condemned the incident, citing the 'reckless and dangerous tactics' of criminal gangs who use increasingly large vessels to transport more people per crossing.

Despite this record-breaking single arrival, provisional Home Office figures indicate that overall small boat arrivals for 2026 are down. The year-to-date total of 14,819 is 43% lower than the same period last year. To combat smuggling, the UK has entered a payment-by-results agreement with France to increase personnel on French beaches by 40%.

In related developments regarding migration sentiment, a YouGov poll shows that 43% of Britons now view migration as 'mostly bad,' an increase from 33% in 2016. Additionally, the charity Care4Calais reported distributing 162,000 items, including clothing and food, to approximately 30,000 migrants in the UK and France.
