English Channel migrant crossings surge in first week of October
A significant surge in small boat crossings occurred in the English Channel during the first week of October. Between October 1 and October 7, approximately 1,739 migrants reached British borders via 23 vessels, averaging one crossing every six minutes.
This figure represents the highest number of arrivals during the first week of October since 2018. Smugglers have reportedly shifted tactics, utilizing larger inflatable dinghies to carry more people—averaging 75 to 76 migrants per boat—to compensate for law enforcement disruptions to their supply chains. Some vessels have carried upwards of 114 people.
Political reactions have been sharp. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp criticized the Labour government for leaving borders “wide open,” while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage described the situation as an “out-of-control disaster.” In response to the arrivals, protests were held in Gosport, Hampshire, resulting in 12 arrests.
