English Channel migrant crossings result in deaths and UK protests

A series of migrant crossings in the English Channel has resulted in fatalities and civil unrest. Off the coast of Berck, France, two men died during a crossing attempt in an overcrowded vessel. Two women were also hospitalized with severe burns caused by contact with fuel on the boat.

In the United Kingdom, approximately 149 migrants were brought ashore in Gosport, Hampshire, after being intercepted by RNLI and French rescue vessels. The arrival triggered significant anti-migrant protests, leading to scuffles with police and the deployment of dispersal orders. Twelve people were arrested during the demonstrations, which included reports of flares being used.

Authorities noted that this is the third such crossing toward the south coast in a month. Since the beginning of the year, at least 24 migrants have died in the Channel.
