Smuggling gangs are increasingly using larger vessels to transport migrants across the English Channel, significantly increasing both their profits and the risks to human life. Between August 8 and August 10, a total of 911 illegal migrants crossed the Channel using 10 boats.

Traffickers are estimated to have earned over £1.8 million during this three-day period, based on an average fee of approximately £2,000 per person. A new record was set when a single 15-meter boat transported 230 people, including an infant. This vessel was roughly two meters longer than any previously recorded boat used for such crossings.

Reports indicate that traffickers may be purchasing large boats manufactured in China for relatively low costs. For example, a 49-foot boat similar to the one used for the 230-person crossing was found online for approximately £1,416. Additionally, gangs often use adolescents to pilot these vessels, sometimes through coercion or threats.

British authorities estimate that each migrant entering the country via these methods can cost taxpayers up to £450,000 annually.
