Eni Gigafactory project in Brindisi enters operational phase
The Eni Storage Systems Gigafactory project in Brindisi is entering its operational phase, focusing on industrial reconversion through battery cell and module production. The project includes an assembly plant for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), with production slated to begin in July 2027. Once fully integrated with the Teverola plant, the initiative aims for an annual capacity of 16 GWh by 2030.
Training for the workforce is a primary focus. The first phase of training for 80 Versalis workers is scheduled to commence on October 12, supported by the Eni Corporate University. This program is intended to facilitate the transition of workers into the new battery production sector and is expected to result in over 1,000 jobs at full capacity.
Labor representatives from CISL have called on the Italian government to expedite a formal program agreement to support the region's industrial transition. The union emphasizes the need for state-guaranteed public funding to ensure social cohesion and to safeguard existing jobs during the shift from basic chemistry to battery production and the decarbonization of local energy infrastructure.
