Eni Gigafactory project in Brindisi
Overview
The Eni Storage Systems Gigafactory project in Brindisi has entered its operational phase, focusing on industrial reconversion through the production of battery cells and modules. The project includes an assembly plant for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), with production expected to begin in July 2027. Once integrated with the Teverola plant, the initiative aims for an annual capacity of 16 GWh by 2030.
Workforce training is a central component of the transition. The first phase of training for 80 Versalis workers is scheduled to begin on October 12, supported by the Eni Corporate University. This program is designed to transition workers into the battery production sector and is expected to create over 1,000 jobs at full capacity.
Labor representatives from CISL have urged the Italian government to accelerate a formal program agreement to support the region’s industrial transition. The union has emphasized the necessity of state-guaranteed public funding to maintain social cohesion and protect existing jobs as the local energy infrastructure undergoes decarbonization.
