Egypt expands energy sector with major Eni and Shell investments
Egypt is aggressively expanding its energy sector through major international partnerships and a multi-year production strategy. Italian energy giant Eni has announced plans to drill 230 wells—comprising 30 exploration and 200 development wells—to boost oil and gas output. Eni, which has already invested $8.5 billion in the country, intends to focus on the Mediterranean and Western Desert, utilizing advanced seismic surveying and artificial intelligence. A key project involves the Denise West discovery in the Mediterranean, with a final investment decision expected soon.
In addition to Eni's activities, Shell has approved a $350 million investment via its subsidiary BG Delta Limited for Phase 12a of the West Delta Deep Marine concession. Meanwhile, the Egyptian government is pursuing a five-year strategy to double crude oil and condensate production, supported by over $4 billion in refinery modernization projects.
To strengthen its position as a regional gas hub, Egypt is also looking to integrate regional resources. This includes plans by Eni and TotalEnergies to develop the Cronos gas field offshore Cyprus and connect it to Egyptian infrastructure. Furthermore, UAE-based ADNOC Drilling is exploring opportunities to participate in Egypt's expanded onshore and offshore drilling programs.
