Eni energy investments in Egypt
Overview
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi met in El Alamein to discuss the ongoing energy partnership between Egypt and the Italian company. Eni has invested $8.5 billion in Egypt to date, focusing on exploration, development, and operation in areas such as the Mediterranean and the Zohr gas field.
Eni announced an integrated investment program to drill 30 exploratory wells and 200 development wells during its next phase, with activity expected to intensify throughout 2026 and 2027. This strategy will utilize artificial intelligence and advanced seismic surveying to target the Mediterranean and Western Desert regions. A key project involves the Denise West discovery in the Mediterranean, with a final investment decision expected soon.
Discussions also addressed regional energy integration, specifically the potential to connect Cyprus’ Cronos gas field to Egyptian infrastructure to strengthen Egypt’s role as a regional hub for gas processing, trading, and liquefaction. This integration involves plans by Eni and TotalEnergies to develop the offshore Cronos field.
Beyond Eni, Shell has approved a $350 million investment via its subsidiary BG Delta Limited for Phase 12a of the West Delta Deep Marine concession. Additionally, UAE-based ADNOC Drilling is exploring opportunities to participate in Egypt's expanded onshore and offshore drilling programs. The Egyptian government is also pursuing a five-year strategy to double crude oil and condensate production, supported by over $4 billion in refinery modernization projects.
