Enkarterri Plans Eclipse Viewing as Supernova 2026ukg Observed

A total solar eclipse will occur on 12 August 2026, with the Enkarterri region of Spain expected to experience a full minute of totality. The local astronomy association Betelgeuse has organized a public viewing, distributing certified eclipse glasses and arranging a gathering at the Explanada del Moro in Lanestosa. Participants are asked to register by email and to bring additional lighting for the evening descent. The event marks the first total eclipse over Bizkaia since 1860 and will not recur there until 2180.

Separately, astronomers reported observations of supernova SN 2026ukg, a Type Ia explosion in galaxy PGC 010437, discovered on 13 July 2026 by the ASAS‑SN survey. Follow‑up spectroscopy classified it as a normal pre‑maximum Ia, and subsequent imaging from Siding Spring Observatory in Australia recorded a steady decline in brightness through late July, confirming its post‑maximum phase.
