ENPA urges Italian towns to adopt pet heat‑protection orders and launches anti‑abandonment campaign

The Italian National Animal Protection Agency (ENPA) has written to the mayors of Siracusa, Solarino, Palazzolo Acreide, Floridia and Canicattini Bagni, urging them to adopt ordinances by 30 September that protect companion animals from extreme summer heat. The proposed rules would require owners to provide water and shade, restrict outdoor exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., and impose fines of €250‑€1,500 for non‑compliance.

ENPA is also relaunching its national anti‑abandonment campaign “Non buttarlo via. Non è un rifiuto” ahead of the Anti‑Abandonment Days on 4‑5 July. In Monza, a free microchipping event for dogs and cats will be held on 5 July at the Parco Canile, supported by GPS‑tracker company KIPPY. The campaign stresses that abandonment is a criminal offence under the 2025 “Legge Brambilla” and promotes responsible adoption and animal identification to curb stray populations.
