Enrico Mentana issues ultimatum to La7 over editorial pluralism

Enrico Mentana, the director of La7's news program, has issued an ultimatum regarding his future at the network as his contract approaches its December 31 expiration. Speaking at the ‘Una Montagna di Libri’ festival in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Mentana stated that he will only remain if the network moves toward greater editorial pluralism.

Mentana criticized the current direction of La7, suggesting it has become too ideologically aligned with the opposition and lacks balance, noting that center-right voters may not feel represented. He described the current atmosphere as one where only one side is heard, while opposing views are often treated dismissively.

La7 owner Urbano Cairo has indicated that any contract renewal will be subject to formal negotiations rather than being guaranteed. While Mentana has not officially announced a departure, rumors of potential moves to Mediaset or Repubblica have circulated. Gaia Tortora, La7's deputy news director, acknowledged the growing tension, noting that the network has increasingly functioned as a voice for the opposition.
