Enrico Mentana contract dispute with La7

Speculation regarding Enrico Mentana’s future at the Italian news channel La7 has intensified as his contract approaches its December 31, 2026, expiration. Initial reports focused on rumors of a non-compete clause that could prevent Mentana from taking new editorial roles for 18 months, a claim Mentana has publicly denied.

During the ‘Una Montagna di Libri’ festival in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Mentana issued a formal ultimatum regarding the network’s editorial direction. He criticized La7 for a lack of pluralism, suggesting the channel has become too ideologically aligned with the opposition and fails to represent center-right voters. Mentana stated, “Either La7 opens up to do something that can be seen by everyone, or I think I can also do something else.”

La7 owner Urbano Cairo has indicated that any contract renewal will be subject to formal negotiations rather than being guaranteed by verbal agreement alone. Adding to the tension, La7 deputy news director Gaia Tortora acknowledged the growing friction, noting that the network has increasingly functioned as a voice for the opposition. While Mentana has not officially announced a departure, his potential exit continues to link his name to rumors of a move to Mediaset or the possible launch of a new all-news network by Repubblica executives.
