Google and Constellation Energy sign $4.3B nuclear power deal

Google and Constellation Energy have entered into a long-term clean energy collaboration to support the growing electricity demands of artificial intelligence and data centers. The agreement includes a 20-year power purchase agreement to add 890 MW of new nuclear capacity to the PJM Interconnection grid through the modernization of 11 existing nuclear units located in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Constellation Energy will invest more than $4.3 billion to upgrade equipment such as turbines, steam generators, and digital control systems to increase the thermal and electrical efficiency of these facilities. The first increments of additional power are expected to be delivered by 2028, with full capacity reached by 2032. This investment is projected to sustain approximately 4,400 existing jobs and create roughly 7,200 temporary construction jobs.

In addition to the nuclear uprates, Google has secured a separate 15-year agreement for 2,700 MW of electricity from Constellation’s existing fleet within the PJM network. The partnership also features a five-year technology collaboration involving Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise to utilize AI in optimizing infrastructure and grid performance.
